The Deep Connection Between Martial Arts and Yoga

Martial Arts and Yoga: A Deep Connection
Martial arts and yoga are intrinsically linked, with yoga being considered the original martial art. Yoga was developed to prepare warriors for battle, teaching them to act with their bodies fully engaged in activity while maintaining the deathless self, a witness to their actions.
I began practicing martial arts at a very young age. My brother was a boxer and a wrestler, and I grew up watching him train. As a child, I would hit the speed bag and eventually became so proficient that I could do it blindfolded. However, what's missing from modern martial arts is the "yoke," the same element often missing in yoga practices today. This core essence, the yoke, is what binds the practice together.
In today's world, many aspire to be UFC fighters, and information that took years to learn is now readily available. Mixed martial arts gyms can teach complex techniques in just a week or two, but this rapid acquisition has led to a loss of discipline and the core essence. Similarly, yoga has often become solely about physical postures (asanas), losing the deeper understanding of its true essence, which is consciousness.
Our yoga system emphasizes discipline, practiced in silent rooms without music. This approach, reminiscent of Bikram Yoga, maintains a high level of discipline, respect for students, and the yoga itself. This sense of community and discipline fosters a deeper connection, as we practice together with a shared commitment.
The Core of Discipline
Martial arts have brought a level of discipline that is often missing in other yoga systems. This core discipline creates a sense of community and shared commitment, as we dig deep and practice together. By integrating these principles, we can achieve a balanced and mindful yoga practice that honors both the physical and spiritual aspects.
